Lurgi Biodiesel is a proven technology for producing high-quality biodiesel from vegetable or animal oils and fats. It uses a process of transesterification with a closed loop water wash to minimize waste water. Furthermore, yield is fully optimized, with 1 kilogram (kg) of feedstock producing 1kg of biodiesel.
Quality standards surpassed
With Lurgi Biodiesel from Air Liquide Engineering & Construction, biodiesel is produced from triglycerides in vegetable or animal oils and fats. Typically, the feedstock is rapeseed, soya, tallow or palm oil. The process involves the transesterification of the oil with methanol in the presence of the alkali catalyst sodium methylate. The technology operates at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 65° Celsius. Crude glycerin of more than 80% purity is generated as a co-product.
Benefits of the Lurgi Biodiesel method include its exceptional yield and the fact that it uses a closed wash water loop, thereby reducing waste water from the core process units. The technology also removes sterol glucosides from palm and soya oil to an extent that exceeds international quality standards, such as the cold soak filtration test (CSFT). Furthermore, the process uses only sodium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride, and any sodium or chloride that ends up in the glycerin can easily be removed through glycerin distillation.
The resulting biodiesel product Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) surpasses all current worldwide standards for quality, including EN14214 and ASTM D6751.
